« Du Côté des Renoir », a permanent discovery tour through the village of Essoyes

This year, Aube en Champagne invites you to discover and experience rural life in Champagne with Renoir and discover the intimacy of the family home.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, grand master impressionist, is present everywhere in Essoyes, typical Champagne village where his wife Aline was born. From 1885, Renoir came every summer to the family home. In this environment of charming landscapes, he drew his inspiration and found his models (a washerwomen, his children and his model Gabrielle, who was his son’s nanny). Essoyes takes you back to the painter daily life and is an ideal destination for romantics and Renoir admirers.

The Renoir family house

In June 2017, the Renoir’s family home opened to public. From the reconstitution and original works exhibited in the dining room, the world of peasant life at the beginning of the 20th century is revealed, when Renoir came to experience rural life in Champagne… Renoir shared intimacy family moments with his friends from Paris who liked to join him in Essoyes. The boaters’ lunch, the young girls at the piano and the bouquets of flowers are so many memories of a happy time in the joy of country parties.

The painter’s workshop

The workshop is a place of dream: it is a contemporary interpretation of the swirl of creation, this sort of powerful flow that carried Renoir, according to his close relations. One of his favorite objects was the wheelchair, symbol of Renoir’s courage and absolute dedication to painting, from where Renoir painted numerous masterpieces: landscapes, washerwomen and life scenes.

Upstairs visitors can discover the box used by the painter to carry his paintings in the train to Paris, along with sculptures like Dancing girl with tambourine, The flute player and letters from Aline.

The “Espace Renoir”

In the permanent exhibition room, each visitor is free to walk around and go from one theme to another: Aline as a model, Gabrielle Renard, Jean’s nurse and favorite muse of Renoir, countryside parties, the enchanted world of childhood and the bon-vivants.

When Champagne and art are associated…

The cultural centre « Du Côté des Renoir » and his partner the Maisons de Champagne decided to go further in the idea of associating art and great vintage: “Taste this Champagne and tell us what painting it brings you to mind”. A new way to describe Champagne and a sparkling look on Renoir’ works.
