Reductions for train travellers and practical online guides to make it easy to travel by train to the Alps.
Skiers and mountain lovers are continually confronted with the problem of how sustainable their favourite activity is. However, there is an easy win to be made, the choice of how to travel to the Alps.
Around 60% of the emissions from a ski holiday come from travel to resort, so choosing the train over a plane or private car is the biggest single impact anyone can do to reduce the impact of their trip. Resort operators across France are all doing a lot to reduce the impact of their operations, from far more efficient snow grooming, to adjusting speeds of lifts in quieter times, and also installing solar panels on some lifts. However, their total emissions are tiny compared to the overall emissions associated with a skier’s stay, with most of that coming from their travel.
Spearheaded by Montagne Verte, an environmental nonprofit based in the Haut Chablais (Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets), the groundbreaking AlpinExpress Pass gives access to discounts on ski passes, accommodation, transfers, ski hire, ski and snowboard lessons, restaurants and other experiences across Morzine, Avoriaz, Les Gets and the Vallée d’Aulps. The total savings mean that a train ticket is now not just a low carbon but also a cheaper way to travel to the Alps.
For 2025 Montagne Verte extended the scope of AlpinExpress to include handy train travel guides to get out to the Alps. Al Judge, president of Montagne Verte explains why : “We created these guides as lots of skiers are put off using the train because it seems more complicated. People worry about anything from whether they’ll find a toilet to how to get from the station to the resort. These guides help with everything from crossing Paris or Lyon, to getting up to the resorts.”
The guides include photos to help you find your way, and information such as where to find toilets, what food options are available, and how to reserve buses to resort, or if cash is needed to pay for them.
